Coastal Dune Lakes are a very rare, natural phenomena that only occur in a handful of locations around the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Madagascar and right here in South Walton, Florida.
What makes a Coastal Dune Lake so special? Well, they are truly a natural wonder that Mother Nature created between 2,000 and 10,000 years ago! Also, they consist of fresh water, but they sit just a few feet away from the salty water of the Gulf, separated by sand dunes. Following acts of nature, like a heavy rain storm, the sand dunes weaken and open allowing an overflow of fresh lake water into the Gulf and vice versus. The salt water of the Gulf mixes with the Coastal Dune Lake until the lake level stabilizes. As a result, a rare, brackish ecosystem exists that allows both fresh and saltwater flora, fauna, and wildlife to flourish.
